The best place to discover the butteri is the Tenuta di Alberese, near Alberese, in the Parco della Maremma : they still work there with the herds of Maremma cattle and horses. But you can't just show up to watch them at work: the herds are on a farm property, and a sighting is not guaranteed. The estate offers a visit to the saddlery, by reservation, mainly for groups and school groups; it lasts about 30 minutes and the advertised price is 60 €. It's an explanatory visit, not a cattle-herding demonstration.
To see the butteri in action, look instead for shows organized occasionally. The association Butteri d'Alta Maremma offers them at the Puntone di Scarlino, generally in summer, with horses, cows and equestrian games; the performances announced for 2026, the July 25, August 8 and 22, have already passed. The dates of the next season should be checked before you go. At Alberese, some experiences with farmers also take place in July and August, but they are seasonal and by reservation. In October, you can therefore visit the saddlery if you book; for a show, you'll have to wait for the next schedule.
