Is Grosseto a beautiful city?

Yes, Grosseto is pretty, especially if you appreciate human-scale historic centers rather than museum-cities. Its charm lies in the whole: the Medici walls that surround the center, the quiet streets and the squares around the Duomo. The white and pink marble façade of the San Lorenzo cathedral gives character to the piazza Dante, but don't expect a succession of spectacular monuments on every street corner.

The walk along the walls, whose circuit is about 3 kilometers, is a good way to discover the city without rushing. You can then stroll through the center and visit a museum if local history interests you; plan rather half a day for a leisurely discovery. Grosseto doesn't have the postcard effect of some Tuscan villages, and a few streets may seem ordinary: it is also a city where people live, not a setting entirely geared toward visitors. I would choose it mainly as a pleasant stop in Maremma, or as a starting point to explore the surroundings. You will find more details in this guide to Grosseto in Maremma.

In Grosseto, leave your camera in your pocket a bit: the city is better savored when you stroll without looking for the next great backdrop.
