Per cosa è famosa Grosseto? → What is Grosseto famous for?

Grosseto is best known for its Medici walls, almost entirely preserved, and for being the main town of the Maremma, this part of southern Tuscany with a landscape of plains, countryside and coastline. The walls, redesigned at the end of the 16the century, form an enclosure of about 3 km around the historic centre; you can walk along a large part of it, between bastions and gardens. It is the town's most distinctive feature, more so than any grand spectacular monuments.

Inside, you will find the San Lorenzo cathedral, on Piazza Dante, as well as streets and squares that are easy to explore on foot. The Archaeological and Art Museum of the Maremma gives an overview of the history of the territory, notably its Etruscan and Roman past. Grosseto is also a convenient base for exploring the region: the coast and the Maremma natural park are a short drive away. If you are looking for a dense museum-city like Florence, the centre may seem rather quiet; plan instead a visit of a few hours, then the countryside or the sea. You will find other points of reference in our guide to Grosseto and the Maremma.
