What is the Maremma famous for?

The Maremma is best known for its contrasting landscapes: a coastline still largely unspoiled, vineyard-covered hills, stone villages and rural traditions linked to the butteri, the mounted herdsmen. In the the Maremma regional park, near 9,000 hectares protect around 25 km of coastlinewith beaches, pine groves, marshes and the hills of the Uccellina. Also associated with it are the herds of long-horned cattle, even though the butteri are no longer a common presence throughout the region.

Maremma is also renowned for the Morellino di Scansano, a red wine produced in the hills around Scansano, and for its Etruscan sites, notably around Sovana and Pitigliano. On the coast, one thinks of Monte Argentario, the lagoon ofOrbetello and the park's beaches; inland, the hot springs of Saturnia also attract visitors. Good to know: this is not a small area concentrated around a single town. The sites are scattered, and a car makes getting around much easier. In summer, the best-known beaches and seaside resorts can be crowded; spring and early autumn are often quieter for exploring the hinterland.

My advice: don't fill every day to the brim; in Maremma, detours often have as much charm as the planned stops.
