Is Follonica worth a visit?

Yes, Follonica is worth the detour if you're mainly looking for an easily accessible sandy beach and a convenient town for a few days by the sea. The seafront is at the heart of the town, with free beaches and beach establishments; the seabed slopes down gently, which suits families well. For a more open setting, Pratoranieri, about 5 km from the centre, is accessible on foot or by bike. On the other hand, don't expect a charming medieval village: Follonica is a modern seaside town, and it can be very crowded in July and August.

Besides swimming, you can visit the MAGMA, dedicated to the history of iron smelting in the region, or use Follonica as a base for exploring: Massa Marittima is about 20 minutes by car. I would choose it mainly from late spring to early autumn to enjoy the sea; off-season, the atmosphere is calmer, but the appeal of a beach-centered stay diminishes. If you're there during the carnival, here's what awaits you: the Follonica Carnival.

I would slip Follonica into the trip as a sand and ice interlude, not as the major heritage stop: for old stones, let Massa Marittima take the spotlight instead.
