Follonica is best known for its sandy beaches in the gulf of the same name, but also for its past as a steel town. Facing the island of Elba, it offers shallow water and a sandy seabed, convenient with children; along the shore, free beaches alternate with beach establishments. In summer, however, expect a lively and busy resort, especially in July and August. For a little more space, the beach of Pratoranieri, about 5 km from the centre, is a well-known option, accessible on foot or by bike via part of the coastal path.
Its other distinctive feature is less seaside-related: Follonica developed around its iron and cast iron foundries. You can see traces of this in the park of the former Ilva and visit the MAGMA, housed in a former furnace; the church of San Leopoldo is also linked to this history, with cast iron elements. The town is also known in the region for its carnival, held in winter. In short, Follonica is first and foremost a seaside destination, but its identity is not limited to the beaches: its industrial heritage gives it a different look from that of a simple seaside resort.
