Do you need a license to rent a boat in Porto Ercole?

No, you can rent at Porto Ercole without a license if you choose a boat whose engine remains below the regulatory thresholds and if you sail less than 6 nautical miles (about 11 km) from the coast. In practice, several rental companies offer small boats that don't require a license. The common threshold is 30 kW, i.e. 40.8 HP, but engine displacement also matters and the limits vary depending on the engine type. So check the boat's specifications with the rental company, rather than relying solely on the "no license required" listing. To operate a motorboat without a license, you must be at least 16 ans.

If you want to rent a more powerful boat, go beyond this distance, or not steer it yourself, you will need either the appropriate license or a skipper. Upon handover of the boat, the rental company must explain the operating instructions and navigation limits to you; they may also impose their own conditions, for example a minimum level of experience or an area not to be exceeded. Ask precisely which coves you can reach from Porto Ercole and whether sea conditions may change the itinerary: on the Argentario, wind and swell can make an outing less simple than it seems.

The trap is wanting to make the most of the rental by aiming for the farthest cove: around the Argentario, it's better to keep a stopover in reserve and let the sea set the pace.
