Accommodation savings on the coast vs Maremma inland

Yes, you can save money by sleeping in the countryside, but the gain depends mostly on the distance to the beach and the period. To give an order of magnitude, listed rates for 2026 indicate about 700 € per week for a small apartment in Massa Marittima, at 20 km from Follonica, while an apartment near Castiglione della Pescaia is listed at around 1,040 € per week in high season. These are not strictly comparable accommodations: take these prices as examples, not as an average.

The compromise that often works is an agriturismo 5 to 15 km from the coast : you generally avoid the most expensive locations without going too far. For example, nearAlberese, some apartments show 2026 rates of 400 to 550 € per week for two, and the beach is about 5 km from some accommodations in the area. On the other hand, a car becomes almost necessary; so add fuel, trips and possible parking to the calculation.

Rates rise especially from July to August, with a peak around mid-August. To pay less, aim instead for May, June or September, or sleep in a small inland town. If you want to go to the beach every day, the savings of a very distant accommodation can quickly be eaten up by travel.

The right calculation is not only the price of the bed: choose a spot where you will also want to hang out in the evening, otherwise the countryside will just be a backdrop between two beach days.
