To avoid the tow truck in Italy, park only in an authorized spot and check the signs, including the times and days indicated. Blue lines bleues generally indicate paid parking, white lines blanches a free spot subject to local rules, and yellow lines jaunes a reserved space: do not park there without authorization. Pay the meter or the indicated app and keep your ticket if necessary.
Do not block a pedestrian crossing, sidewalk, driveway, bus stop, reserved lane or emergency access. Also avoid streets where a sign announces a divieto di sosta with rimozione : the car can be towed, especially if it obstructs traffic or if parking is prohibited during street cleaning or a market. A ZTL mainly concerns access and can result in a fine; it is not in itself a tow-away sign, but do not confuse the rules.
If your car has disappeared, call the Polizia Locale of the municipality before assuming it has been stolen: they can tell you whether it has been towed and where to retrieve it. Fees and procedures vary by city, so check local guidance. The possibility of towing depends on the Highway Code and the rules posted on site.
