How long should you stay in Maremma for a road trip?

For a road trip in Maremma, plan on 4 à 5 jours : it's a good compromise for combining hill villages, the coast and breaks without spending your whole stay behind the wheel. In 3 days, you can see one area, but not explore the whole region at a relaxed pace. The distances don't look huge on the map — allow about 75 km between Grosseto and Pitigliano — but the backcountry roads are often winding and sightseeing takes time.

On 5 days, you could devote two days to the tuff towns, such as Pitigliano and Sorano, also planning Saturnia or Montemerano, then two days at the coast, aroundOrbetello and the Monte Argentario. Orbetello–Saturnia represents about 55 à 56 km by road: it's better to avoid chaining several round trips between the sea and the villages every day.

If you want to add the Maremma Park, beaches and an excursion to theGiglio Island, aim for instead 7 days or more ; the ferry and the schedules can eat up a good part of a day. In short: 4 days for a targeted overview, 5 days for a balanced itinerary, and one week if you want to alternate sightseeing and real breaks.

Keep some flexibility in your itinerary: in Maremma, an alley in Pitigliano can easily make you forget the time of your next stop.
