Notre conseil
Tuscany hides in its volcanic depths an unsuspected wealth: natural hot springs accessible free of charge, without tourist infrastructure or crowds. These wild hot springs are the quintessence of hidden Tuscany — sulfurous waters gushing straight from the ground, forming natural white travertine pools in the heart of unspoiled landscapes.
The Maremma and southern Tuscany concentrate most of these geothermal treasures. The Terme di Saturnia and their natural waterfalls (Cascate del Mulino) are the best known, but far from the only ones. The Sorano area, the surroundings of Petriolo or the springs of the Amiata hills hide little-frequented sites, accessible after a few minutes' walk through the Mediterranean macchia.
The wild hot springs experience is unique: plunging into 37-38°C water at sunrise, surrounded by sulfurous vapors, with a view over the Tuscan hills. The therapeutic properties of these waters — rich in sulfur, calcium and magnesium — have been recognized since Etruscan antiquity. The Etruscans, then the Romans, had already built baths in this volcanic region.
To make the most of these sites, we recommend morning visits (before 9am in summer) or in the low season — from November to March, the misty atmosphere of the open-air thermal waterfalls is particularly magical. Some sites are accessible all year round, even in cold weather, the natural warmth of the water making bathing pleasant even in winter.
Each entry in our selection indicates access times, parking conditions, seasonal visitor levels and our practical tips for a successful visit. Our multi-criteria rating (authenticity, accessibility, value for money, photogenic quality, experience) helps you choose the hot spring that best matches your expectations.
