Why is Talamone famous?

Talamone is best known for its connection with Giuseppe Garibaldi : in 1860, it made a stopover there with the Expedition of the Thousand to resupply before continuing on to Sicily. The village is also marked by its Rocca aldobrandesca, a medieval fortress that overlooks the port and the houses of the old town. Looking up from the narrow streets, you quickly understand the appeal of its location: the promontory allowed the bay to be watched.

Its history is even older: the surrounding area was inhabited in Etruscan times, and the remains of a temple from the 4th century BC are located on the Talamonaccio hill, outside the centre. Today, Talamone is also renowned for wind sports, especially kitesurfing and windsurfing in the bay. As for swimming, don't expect a long sandy beach at the foot of the village: the nearby coastline is rather rocky, while the sandy beaches lie further south. Save Talamone for a stop where you stroll without watching the clock: its charm reveals itself better when you take your time than when you tick it off at a running pace.
