In Maremma, your best chance of observing flamingos is at the Orbetello lagoon, especially in the area of the Laguna di Ponente. They are present in greater numbers fromautumn to spring, with a peak often reported in December, but their presence varies: you may see few, or even none, on the day of your visit. Morning is generally a good time to look for them. To observe them from trails and hides, check the opening of theWWF oasis, which may depend on the season. Otherwise, the road along the lagoon, near Orbetello Scalo, sometimes allows you to spot them from afar.
You can also try your luck in the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve, near Castiglione della Pescaia, notably around the Casa Rossa Ximenes and the observation areas. It is another wetland frequented by flamingos, but sightings are not guaranteed. Bring binoculars: the birds often stay at a distance, and it is better not to leave the paths or try to get closer. To avoid a disappointing trip, check the opening hours of the trails or guided tours before setting off.
