À Bagno di Gavorrano, mainly look at the church San Giuseppe Lavoratore and the buildings linked to its mining past; the village today is more of an inhabited town than a preserved historic center. The church recalls its post-war development, when the mine attracted working-class families. You can also spot the old "Palazzi", apartment buildings constructed for the Montecatini employees: their architecture tells this industrial story, with sometimes uncomfortable traces of the political context of the time.
The name Bagno refers to its former sulfurous waters, known as Bagno di Nerone; they disappeared in 1955. To learn more about the mining history, the GeoMet and the mining museum are located in the area of the former Bagnetti, but check the opening hours before going: they may vary depending on the season. The old Gavorrano, perched at about 3 km, nicely completes the visit with its medieval ramparts and the church of San Giuliano. To place these villages in their mining landscape, you can read our presentation of the Colline Metallifere. Don't come to Bagno expecting an active spa resort: its spa past is above all a story to discover on site.
