If you mainly want to enjoy the sea with services close at hand, choose Follonica ; if you prefer a more picturesque old town for strolling after the beach, Castiglione della Pescaia will suit you better. In Follonica, you have a long sandy beach, beach clubs and paths to reach beaches like Pratoranieri, about 5 km from the centre. It's a practical choice, especially with children, but the town has a more urban look and summer can be lively.
Castiglione has more charm on the old town and harbour side, with beaches within walking distance and other more natural areas towards Rocchette or Marina di Grosseto. In return, the seaside atmosphere there is less that of a town equipped for everyday life, and the centre can be very crowded in high season. The two are close: allow about 24 km and 30 minutes by car between the centres; a bus also connects the two, but check its timetable for your dates. My advice: stay in Follonica if you prioritise convenience, then take a trip to Castiglione. If you come during carnival, the Follonica Carnival may also tip the scales.
