What are some good vacation ideas in Tuscany?

For a first trip, plan 7 to 10 days : spend 2 days in Florence, then stay a few nights in the Val d'Orcia to visit Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia and Montalcino. It's a good option if you want to mix museums, villages, and country roads. Outside the cities, a car really makes getting around easier; however, avoid driving in historic centers, where access is often restricted.

If you prefer the sea and wide open spaces, devote 3 to 5 days to the Maremma : alternate beaches, walks, and villages like Pitigliano and Sovana. You can also make a stop at the Cascate del Mulino, near Saturnia : the natural pools are free, but the water smells of sulfur and the place can be very crowded in summer. To avoid the intense heat and some of the crowds, aim rather for May-June or September.

Another option, without changing accommodation often: choose Siena as a base during 4 or 5 nights, then explore the surrounding hills and towns by car. If you go in the middle of summer, book accommodation and car early; prices and availability vary greatly depending on the area and dates. For a car-free stay, favor Florence and Siena, and limit rural stops, which are less easy to reach by public transport.

A word of advice from the young boar: don't fill each day to the brim; in Tuscany, spontaneous detours often have more charm than the itinerary.
