What activities can you do in Porto Ercole?

À Porto Ercole, set aside half a day for the old town and the Spanish fortifications of the 16th century. Entre par la Porta Senese, then climb the narrow streets up to the piazza Santa Barbara and the Palazzo dei Governanti ; also stop by the Torre dell’Orologio et l’église Sant’Erasmo, where the tombs of former Spanish governors are located. Allow about 1 h 30 to 2 h to wander at a leisurely pace. The route includes cobblestones, steps and climbs: comfortable shoes recommended.

To better understand the port's defensive history, visit the Forte Stella, a star-shaped fort perched above the coast. Its opening is seasonal and varies by period; the published schedules include visits on certain days in spring and autumn, and more often in summer. The stated adult price is about 4 € ; check the opening hours with the tourist office before setting off, as the fort may be closed in the off-season. You can also spot the monument dedicated to Caravage in the village: the painter died in Porto Ercole in 1610, but the identification of his remains is not certain. The interior accesses to the Rocca and the Forte Filippo are not always open to the public.

Don't turn the stroll into a monument hunt: leave some room for detours, as that's often where Porto Ercole reveals its most charming side.
