What is the difference between Orbetello and the Argentario?

Orbetello is a town on the edge of a lagoon; the Argentario is the nearby promontory, where you will find in particular Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole. The two names are often associated, but they do not refer to the same place. Orbetello occupies a strip of land in the middle of the lagoon, between the Giannella and Feniglia tombolos; a road causeway connects it to Monte Argentario.

For a base, choose Orbetello if you want a populated centre around the lagoon, with shops, walks and access to the beaches of Feniglia and Giannella. Choose instead the Argentario if you are aiming for the harbours, coves and roads of the promontory: the terrain is more rugged, and some beaches are less easy to reach without a car or boat. In summer, expect bigger crowds and parking difficulties near the beaches.

The two are close: Orbetello is about 9–10 km from Porto Santo Stefano by road, i.e. about fifteen minutes outside heavy traffic. You can therefore visit both without changing accommodation; just remember that Orbetello is the lagoon town, while the Argentario refers to the promontory and, administratively, the municipality that includes Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.

These two names often stick together like two wild boar piglets in the mud; tell them apart clearly before plotting your itinerary, and the map will immediately be much clearer!
