What is the difference between eSIM and a physical SIM card?

A SIM physique is the small card you insert into your phone; an eSIM is its digital equivalent, downloaded and activated on the device. With an eSIM, you therefore have nothing to remove or replace, but your phone must be compatible and unlocked. Installation is usually done with an app or a QR code, sometimes before departure; check the seller's instructions and the planned activation date.

For a stay in Tuscany or in Maremma, a travel eSIM can give you access to mobile data without changing your usual card. Warning: some offers are data only, with no calls or texts, and coverage depends on the partner network — an eSIM does not get better signal by nature. If your phone supports two lines, you can often keep your usual SIM to receive calls or texts and choose the eSIM for data. Plans vary by data volume and duration; compare the terms rather than just the price. If you already have a plan from an EU country, first check your roaming allowance in Italy: it may be enough, sometimes with a reasonable fair-use limit.

On the small roads of the Maremma, an offline downloaded map remains a good companion, whatever your SIM choice.
