For snorkeling from the shore, I recommend Cala del Gesso, , on the Monte Argentario : the rocks and pebbles offer more to observe than the long sandy beaches of the Maremma. When the sea is calm, you can follow the rocky edges with mask and snorkel; however, visibility varies depending on the wind and swell, so the water is not always clear. For a richer outing underwater, Giannutri is another option, but you have to take the boat from Porto Santo Stefano and organize the day around the ferry schedules.
Access to Cala del Gesso requires a bit of effort: from the pedestrian entrance near the SP 65, at km 5.9, allow about 20 to 25 minutes of walking, with a fairly steep descent and climb back up. The cove is pebbled and there are no services on site: bring water, suitable shoes and everything you need for the day. In summer, leave early to avoid the heat on the path and check the sea conditions before getting in the water. If it's rough, it's better to skip snorkeling that day.
