To go snorkeling in Maremma, head for the rocky coves of Monte Argentario rather than the long sandy beaches: start with Cala del Gesso or Cala Grande, where the rocks offer more to see. At Cala del Gesso, allow 20 to 25 minutes of walking from the road, on a steep access path; there are no facilities on the beach, so bring water and suitable shoes. Cala Grande also requires an approach walk, of about 25 to 35 minutes depending on the access route. In both cases, avoid the trail if you are not comfortable with steep descents.
Plus au nord, Cala Violina lets you combine swimming and snorkeling, especially near the rocky points; the center of the bay is sandy and less interesting underwater. From the Val Martina parking lot, allow about 1,8 km à pied, and check the reservation rules in season: access is limited. Cala Martina, accessible via the trails in the area, is another, rockier option. If you can take the ferry,Giglio Island also offers good seabeds around its coves, especially near Arenella. It is best to go when the sea is calm, preferably in the morning; after wind or swell, visibility can quickly drop. Avoid touching the rocks or chasing the fish.
