What to do in Tuscany when it rains?

When it rains in Tuscany, go for museums, wine cellar tastings and thermal baths rather than walks in the countryside. At Grosseto, the MAAM present the history of the Maremma, from the Etruscans to sacred art; the natural history museum is another indoor option. In Florence, the Uffizi or Palazzo Strozzi easily fill a good part of the day, but book if possible: the major museums can be very crowded, and opening hours vary by venue and season.

If you are in the Maremma, a tasting at a winery can be pleasant in grey weather, but call ahead: some visits are by reservation only. The Saturnia thermal baths have indoor spaces; the Cascate del Mulino, on the other hand, are natural open-air pools, so rain won't protect you from them. In heavy storms, avoid the pools and exposed secondary roads. For light rain, keep villages like Pitigliano or Montemerano on the itinerary, with a waterproof jacket, but don't count on a fully covered visit. Check openings on the day itself: several small museums close on certain days, especially in the off-season.

A rainy day is sometimes the best excuse to stop rushing from one village to the next: in Tuscany, trying to save every stop often ends up spoiling the pleasure.
