Where is the Bellafreddi trail?

The Bellafreddi trail is located at Rocchette di Fazio, a hamlet of the municipality of Semproniano, in the province of Grosseto, in the Tuscan Maremma. It starts at the foot of the village and descends to the river Albegna, près du Sasso del Nibbio and the Pozzo Diavolo.

To find the starting point, follow the road that descends from Rocchette di Fazio towards La Crocina : a few hundred metres after the village, a dirt track opens on the right. The trail is marked in red and leads to the river by a fairly steep descent. As a loop back to the village, allow about 3 km, 270 m of elevation gain and near 2 hours of walking; the difficulty is moderate. Bring suitable shoes, as the terrain is uneven.

Note: the old extension towards Roccalbegna, via the Bellafreddi pass and the current Oasi dei Rocconi, is not passable. If you want to reach the Albegna for a swim, check the conditions on site and avoid the area after heavy rain.

The name Bellafreddi has a hint of a fairy tale about it, but the real contrast is the one between the village's old stones and the wild character of the Albegna. Save it for a walk when you feel like a bit of adventure, not a stroll in sandals!
