Where to stay in Maremma for an authentic immersion?

For a countryside immersion, choose a agriturismo in the hinterland, around Montemerano, Manciano or Scansano ; to be closest to the trails and the coast, look instead towardsAlberese. Près de Pitigliano, you can stay in a tuff hamlet or in a farm in the surrounding area, about 27 km from Saturnia, i.e. half an hour's drive depending on the route. Distances are covered by car: the villages are scattered and public transport does not easily replace a car for exploring the countryside.

For a more everyday atmosphere, take a room or an apartment in the centre of a village; in the countryside, check whether breakfast or dinner is offered, as “agriturismo” does not necessarily mean meals prepared on site. AroundAlberese, you will be close to the Maremma Park et à environ 15 km from Grosseto, but less close to the hilltop villages of the south. The spring and September-October often offer a good compromise for visiting; in August, demand and rates go up. As a guideline, sometimes expect 80 € or more per night for two in an agriturismo, with wide variations depending on the season and the services. Also check the air conditioning in summer and access via an unpaved road.

Keep one evening without plans to stroll around the village and choose where to dine on the spot: in Maremma, the charm also lies in the pace, not only in the scenery.
