Tosco Tosco

The hot springs of the Tuscan Maremma are a category of their own in our directory: neither the paid thermal baths with spas and treatments, nor simply the free open-air baths, but a range that covers both extremes and everything in between. Hidden Tuscany has chosen to document free-access or low-cost sites as a priority, in keeping with our philosophy of authentic and accessible travel.

The Free terms of Saturnia (Cascate del Mulino) are the absolute reference: accessible free of charge 24/7, these white travertine waterfalls with sulfurous waters at 37-38°C are one of the most photographed images of Tuscany. But the site's well-deserved popularity comes at a price: in summer, attendance can be intense. Our tips specify the time slots and seasons for enjoying the place in good conditions.

Several other natural hot springs in the region are far less well known: the Terme del Gorello at Saturnia (natural cascading pools), the Petriolo springs in the Farma valley, or the natural baths around Sorano. These sites lack the spectacular photogenic appeal of Saturnia, but offer a more intimate thermal immersion.

Visiting the wild hot springs in winter is particularly recommended: the contrast between the steam of the warm waters and the cold air, combined with the near-absence of tourists, creates an atmosphere that summer photos give no hint of.
