The wine
In the Tirrenico Maremma Toscana Rosso 2024, I find an expression of Tuscany turned toward the open sea: black fruit and ripe cherries, carried by a concentrated structure and a flavorful finish. This red from the Belguardo estate balances immediate pleasure with depth, without trying to complicate the moment. A bottle to keep in mind when you want a generous wine that remains easy to read.
Coming from the DOC Maremma Toscana appellation, the Tirrenico comes from Italy's west coast, in that part of Tuscany where the vineyards benefit from breezes blowing in off the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its name echoes that sea, itself associated in ancient legend with Tyrrhenus and the Etruscans. The Mazzei family, long involved in the wine trade, pays tribute to it through this cuvée from the Belguardo estate. Here, what I notice most is the dialogue between the maritime landscape and a blend of grape varieties that gives the wine its assertive character.
The 2024 vintage blends 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Alicante, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The grapes are harvested at maturity, then sorted and destemmed. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, between 28 and 30 °C, followed by a maceration on the skins for 16 to 18 days. The wine then spends twelve months in 225-liter French oak barrels. In the glass, its red robe accompanies a nose marked by blackberry and ripe cherry, with deep, juicy notes. The palate is concentrated and well defined, with substance that remains accessible. The flavorful, persistent finish extends the fruit. The wood is part of its profile, but the wine keeps a fruity energy that keeps it from seeming austere.
I would serve it with pasta, roasted or grilled vegetables, three options that respect its fruit and structure. For a more unexpected pairing, chocolate also appears among the suggested matches: it's up to you to choose a preparation that doesn't mask the wine. The Tirrenico can accompany a convivial dinner, when you want a red with enough presence to hold its own at the table, yet without turning the meal into a solemn tasting. Its persistent finish invites you to take your time, glass after glass. If you explore the reds of the Maremma, this cuvée offers an accessible encounter with a blend shaped by maritime influences. I would choose it for a simple, shared meal, and to taste another facet of Tuscany, between ripe fruit, barrel aging and sea breeze.
