Comment on noteThe wine
Today I invite you to explore a wine that has redefined the boundaries of Tuscan excellence. Sassicaia, a name that resonates with prestige, is not just a wine, it is a story, a quiet revolution that has raised Bolgheri to the pantheon of the world's great terroirs.
Nestled on the Tuscan coast, the Tenuta San Guido estate is the cradle of this legend. It is here that the Incisa della Rocchetta family dared to plant Bordeaux grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, in a region then unexplored for quality viticulture. Sassicaia, first marketed in 1968, thus paved the way for the "Super Tuscans", wines which, through their boldness and quality, won international recognition. This vision even led to the creation of the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC in 1994, the only Italian DOC dedicated to a single wine.
The 2018 vintage, mainly made from Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc, embodies this quest for balance between power and finesse. Its robe displays an intense ruby red, which evolves towards garnet with time. On the nose, I perceive a remarkable aromatic complexity: notes of ripe red fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, spices, tobacco, hints of leather and even a balsamic touch. On the palate, it reveals richness and layering, with silky tannins and vibrant acidity that promise beautiful persistence and exceptional ageing potential. Fermentation in steel tanks and ageing of at least 24 months in French oak barrels contribute to this harmony.
To elevate this great wine, I suggest pairing it with dishes that can converse with its complexity. Imagine it alongside grilled red meats, game with intense flavours or aged cheeses. It is the ideal companion for festive meals, moments when one takes the time to savour every instant. Sassicaia 2018 is not just a wine to taste, it is an experience, a journey to the heart of Tuscan innovation and excellence that I invite you to discover.
