seagrass meadows

You'll often see posidonia on the beaches of Maremma, especially after a storm. These are those brown, slightly stringy clumps that look like balls of wool or dried seaweed. In reality, it's a marine plant, not an algae, essential to the Mediterranean ecosystem. If you find it a bit less glamorous than a pristine beach, know that its presence is a sign of healthy, good-quality water. Maremma is proud of its posidonia; it protects the coastline from erosion and shelters rich marine life. So don't always expect smooth white sand everywhere — it's the price to pay for a preserved sea.
