When someone talks to you about basins in Maremma, they're obviously not talking about sinks. Here, they are natural pools, often carved into the rock by the erosion of rivers or hot springs. You'll find them mainly in areas where the water surfaces and stagnates, such as in Saturnia or Petriolo. They are freshwater basins, sometimes warm, where you can swim. That's the point for you: a free swim in the middle of nature, far from chlorinated pools. It's a local, rustic experience, often frequented by the locals.
