Orbetello: The Secret Lagoon of the Flamingos in Maremma

If Tuscany is a melody, then the Maremma is its wildest, most authentic part. At the heart of this region, Orbetello reveals itself as a hidden gem. Forget the crowds and the souvenir shops. Here, it is nature that sets the tone, in a symphony where flamingos are the soloists and the wind, the conductor.

The Orbetello lagoon offers itself as a changing mirror under the sky, with the Argentario as a backdrop. A well-kept secret that guides do not really dare to reveal.

A Lagoon Between Two Worlds

Orbetello is a peninsula gently resting in the middle of an immense lagoon, connected to Monte Argentario by a central causeway. On either side, two long sand spits, the Tomboli della Giannella and della Feniglia, separate the brackish waters from the Tyrrhenian Sea. This unique configuration creates an ecosystem of incredible richness.

The lagoon is a protected Nature Reserve, managed by WWF Italy. More than 1,500 hectares of marshland teeming with life, an essential stopping point for thousands of migratory birds.

The Pink Flamingos: Majestic Guests

Since 1994, flamingos have made the Ponente lagoon their home. Watching them filter the water with their curved beaks is an almost meditative experience. Sunset offers an impressionist spectacle, where their silhouettes stand out against a blazing horizon.

To admire them, I recommend the birdwatching trails of the WWF Oasis near the Feniglia. A simple tip: follow the road that runs along the western lagoon from Orbetello Scalo. The Cosa promontory in Orbetello offers a 360° panoramic view over the lagoon.

A Paradise for All the Senses

Orbetello is much more than the flamingos. It is a place that invites slowness and contemplation.

  • The Beaches:
    • The Tombolo della Feniglia : A seven-kilometer ribbon of golden sand, perfect for families.
    • The Tombolo della Giannella : Eight kilometers of fine sand, ideal for swimming.
    • Ansedonia : A sand and pebble beach, more secluded.
  • The Coves of the Argentario:
    • Cala del Gesse : A bay of white pebbles with electric blue waters.
    • Cala Galera : More accessible, near the marina.
    • Acqua Dolce Beach : Perfect for snorkeling.
  • The Silence and the Scents: The rustling of the wind in the reeds, the cry of the herons, the smell of maritime pines mixed with sea spray.

To experience Orbetello to the fullest, come in spring or autumn. The climate is mild, the crowds are gone, and the twilight light on the lagoon is of an unreal beauty.

Don't forget to taste the local flavors: the bottarga di muggine, the blue fish, the eel. The local cuisine celebrates the authentic Maremma.

Orbetello is not a place you visit, it is a place you feel. A place where nature is so powerful that it reminds you of what truly matters.
