👥 Who it's for: Nature lovers, families, hikers and cyclists in search of authenticity
Forget the crowded and noisy beaches; at the Feniglia, a completely different experience awaits you. Between Orbetello and the Argentario, a tongue of fine golden sand unfolds, lined with a majestic pine forest where nature reigns supreme and where time seems suspended. Get your bike ready, adventure awaits!
La Feniglia is not a beach like any other. It is a «tombolo», a coastal sand spit, which connects the hill of Ansedonia to the east and Monte Argentario to the west. Imagine a strip of land about 6 kilometers long and 474 hectares in area, classified as a nature reserve since 1971. It is a fragile and preserved ecosystem, carefully managed by the State Forestry Corps, where biodiversity reigns supreme.
What fascinates most at the Feniglia is this feeling of being both by the sea and in the heart of a forest. The pine forest of maritime and stone pines, holm oaks and junipers, offers welcome shade and intoxicating scents. It is a true breath of fresh air, far from the hustle and bustle of cities.
One of the great strengths of the Feniglia is its accessibility, while preserving its wild character. The reserve is crossed by an unpaved road, closed to motor traffic. It is a paradise for walkers and cyclists! You can stroll along its entire length, either on foot or by bike. Paths open at regular intervals to take you directly to the beach, or to the edge of the lagoon, where birdwatching hides await you.
For families, it is ideal. The seabed is very shallow, perfect for young children, and the areas of white sand are immense. A few beach establishments offer services, but the main part of the beach remains free, offering you precious freedom.
Practical tip: Rent a bike in Orbetello or Ansedonia and set off on an adventure! The further you go from the access points, the clearer the water and the emptier the beach will become.
The Feniglia is also a privileged encounter with nature. The reserve is home to a varied fauna which, with a little luck and a lot of discretion, will let itself be observed. The fallow deer are the undisputed stars of the place. Introduced in the 1950s, they roam freely and are used to human presence. But the Feniglia is also the kingdom of wild boars, foxes, badgers, stone martens and many species of birds, especially in the part facing the lagoon.
The vegetation is typically Mediterranean, with maritime pines, umbrella pines, holm oaks, cork oaks and junipers. It is a true concentrate of wild Maremma, where every walk is a lesson in botany and zoology.
Beyond its natural beauty, the Feniglia also holds a fascinating history. Archaeological excavations have revealed traces of human presence since Antiquity, notably at the eastern and western ends of the tombolo.
The most famous anecdote is undoubtedly the one linked to the great painter Caravaggio. It is said that in 1610, fleeing legal troubles, he took refuge in the marshes of this area and contracted malaria, which proved fatal. A commemorative stele is also present in the reserve, a moving tribute to this tormented artist.
La Feniglia is an ideal destination for those who wish to get away from the usual seaside life and immerse themselves in nature, while enjoying a magnificent beach sheltered from the winds. A true gem of hidden Tuscany.
