Grosseto, the capital of the Maremma, is surrounded by its hexagonal 16th-century Medici walls, among the best preserved in Tuscany. The city is the main gateway to the coastal Maremma and the Maremma Natural Park. The Museo Archeologico e d'Arte della Maremma houses the region's most important collection of Etruscan archaeology.
The activities available from Grosseto are particularly varied: excursions in the Maremma Natural Park (Alberese, 10 km to the south), guided tours of the medieval old town and the walls, access to the beaches of the coast (Marina di Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia), boat trips from the nearby port, and hikes in the hills of the inland Maremma. Grosseto is the logistical base for activities throughout the whole province.
