What sites should you visit near Grosseto?

Near Grosseto, start with Roselle, then choose between the Etruscan site of Vetulonia and the medieval center of Massa Marittima. In Grosseto itself, the ramparts can be explored on foot and the duomo San Lorenzo, on Piazza Dante, is easy to visit while passing through the historic center. The Archaeological and Art Museum of the Maremma rounds out the walk nicely if you want to understand local history before heading into the countryside.

À about 10 km to the north, the Roselle archaeological park brings together Etruscan and Roman remains, including sections of ramparts and an amphitheater. Plan for about 2 km of walking on the site, with little shade: it's best to avoid the hottest hours in summer. Admission costs 4 €. In October 2026, the park closes at 6:45 pm until October 24; hours then change for winter.

Vetulonia, about 22 km by road, is worth the detour for its Etruscan remains and its monumental tombs; access to the archaeological park is free, but some tombs may be closed. For a day in a medieval village, continue on to Massa Marittima : its cathedral and Piazza Garibaldi are the main landmarks. A car makes these excursions easier, especially for Vetulonia.

In your place, I would save Massa Marittima for the end: the change of atmosphere after the ruins gives the day a nice second wind, without rushing from one site to another like a hurried wild boar.
