How is the sea at Scarlino?

À Scarlino, the sea is generally clear, especially in the small coves of Bandite di Scarlino when the sea is calm. The coastline is located at Puntone, on the edge of the Gulf of Follonica: the village of Scarlino, however, is inland. You will find easier-to-access beaches near Puntone and wilder coves by heading towards Cala Violina or Cala Martina.

Cala Violina has light sand and often transparent water; it's a good option for swimming and snorkeling, but the beach is small and can be very crowded in summer. From the Val Martina parking lot, allow about 1.5 km on foot on a trail. In summer season, access is regulated: check the conditions and book before leaving. Cala Martina is narrower and its bottom is mostly pebbly, so water shoes can be useful.

In practice, choose the Puntone if you want to settle in without a long walk; aim for the coves if you prefer a natural setting and don't mind walking to get there. The clarity also depends on the weather: after wind or a rough sea, the water can be less clear. The most pleasant months for swimming are generally from June to September.

The real dilemma in Scarlino is choosing between a quiet day and a little adventure before you even lay out your towel. For the coves, save some energy for the walk... and slip a snorkel mask into your bag!
