When to see flamingos at Lake Burano?

You'll have the best chances of seeing flamingos at Lake Burano in autumn and winter, when the Maremma wetlands host more migratory birds. However, they may be present at other times: a count carried out in August 2025 recorded 357. Their numbers vary, so a visit doesn't guarantee you'll see any, nor that they'll be near the observation points.

To observe them, bring binoculars: the birds often stay at a distance, on the lake. TheWWF Oasis of Lake Burano can be visited with a guide, by mandatory reservation no later than the day before by 1 p.m. From late September to early May, individual visits take place on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, usually at 10 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. (3 p.m. during daylight saving time). From mid-May to September, the time slots are usually in the late afternoon and vary depending on the month. Check the times before you go, as the oasis may close in case of weather alerts. Also bring closed-toe shoes; pets are not allowed.

At Burano, it's better to come with a patient eye than with the urge to tick a box: the pink ballet is best savored even from afar.
