What are the villages near Castel del Piano?

The villages closest to Castel del Piano are Arcidosso, about 5 km, and Seggiano, about ten kilometers away; a little further on, you can reach Santa Fiora, about 15 km, or Abbadia San Salvatore, , at about 20 km. Generally allow 10 to 30 minutes by car, depending on the destination and the route chosen. These are approximate distances: mountain roads wind around, and the trip can take longer than the map suggests.

Arcidosso is the simplest detour for a short outing; Seggiano is suitable if you want to explore the slope that descends toward the Orcia valley. Santa Fiora and Abbadia San Salvatore require a bit more time, but combine well in a day devoted to Monte Amiata. You can also look at Montenero d’Orcia, about 15 to 20 km, for a quieter stop. A car makes visiting much easier: buses exist, but their schedules are not always convenient for visiting several villages in a row. If you are planning your stay in Castel del Piano around its equestrian festival, here are some details about the Palio di Castel del Piano.

It is better to choose one slope for the day: the villages of the Amiata are best savored without turning the outing into a stamp-collecting race!
