What are the hours and atmosphere of the Pitigliano market?

The weekly market of Pitigliano is held on Wednesday morning, à la Piazza del Mercato ; plan for a time slot of about 8 am to 1 pm–1:30 pm. The hours may vary a bit depending on the stalls, so it's best to arrive before noon if you want to see it all without rushing. On public holidays, the market may be moved or not take place: check on site if your visit falls on a Wednesday holiday.

The atmosphere is that of a weekday market frequented by locals, not a craft market staged for visitors. You'll find stalls of everyday goods — notably clothing and food items — and a lively morning, especially when people are doing their shopping. It's pleasant for seeing the town in its daily life, but don't necessarily expect a wide selection of local specialties or a market that takes over the entire historic center. If you also want to wander through the alleys, save some time afterwards: the market and old Pitigliano are not one and the same, and the atmosphere changes noticeably once the stalls are packed up.

The market is Pitigliano for errands; the alleys, Pitigliano for eyes that linger everywhere. I like this dual reading: don't ask the stalls to put on the whole show!
