What are travelers' opinions on Orbetello?

Travelers describe Orbetello as a pleasant small town for its old town and lagoon setting, but more as a quiet stopover or a base for exploring the surroundings than as a destination rich in sightseeing. Walks near the water, the mill on the lagoon and birdwatching often come up in positive reviews; in winter, you can notably see flamingos there. The town lies between the lagoons and the two sand strips of Giannella and Feniglia, which allow you to reach the beaches and the area of Monte Argentario.

The nature reserves are especially practical: some visitors report moucherons near the lagoon and, during hot weather, episodes of unpleasant smells. This is not a problem reported by everyone nor something I would present as constant, but it is a reason to check recent reviews if you go in the middle of summer. Also expect larger crowds and a less peaceful atmosphere on the beaches in high season. In short, Orbetello suits you if you are looking for a quiet stay between nature and sea; if you mainly want a very lively old town or beaches right at the foot of your accommodation, the reviews suggest adjusting your expectations.

Leave some slack in your schedule: Orbetello seems to me to be the kind of stopover where the best memories come from a detour rather than from a list of sights to check off.
