In the Maremma Natural Park, you can mainly observe birds, as well as wild boars, fallow deer and roe deer. The park records more than 250 species of birds : near the mouth of the Ombrone, look for herons, egrets, flamingos and birds of prey. In winter, wild geese and cranes stop there in large numbers; they generally arrive from mid-October.
Foxes, badgers, porcupines and martens also live in the woods and the maquis. The wolf and the wildcat are present, but remain very difficult to spot. For mammals, it's better to walk early in the morning or at dusk: most are discreet and some are mainly active at night. Fallow deer are the easiest to spot, sometimes even during the day, in the clearings and transition zones between woods and open spaces in the north of the park; in winter, they can also be seen on the Collelungo beach. The wetland birds, near the Ombrone, are generally a better bet if you want to observe animals without waiting long.
