Which wildlife does the WWF reserve of Bosco dei Rocconi protect?

The reserve of the Bosco dei Rocconi It mainly protects birds, notably rare raptors such as the honey buzzard and the peregrine falcon. The Lanner falcon, emblematic of the site, is still present, but its nesting is no longer regular there: the WWF hopes for its return. You can also find in the reserve the kingfisher, the dipper and the crag martin, which frequents the cliffs.

The wildlife also includes discreet mammals: pine marten, polecat and wildcat; the wolf is occasionally reported. Reptiles are represented, among others, by Hermann's tortoise, the four-lined snake, the grass snake and the viper. In spring and summer, several butterflies are visible, including the rare false grayling. These species are protected along with their habitats of forest, river and limestone cliffs; however, spotting them is never guaranteed.

For a visit, plan a guided outing: the WWF oasis is explored by reservation, with no independent access, generally on Saturday and Sunday. It is located about 45 km from Grosseto ; the last few kilometres include a road signposted as damaged. Contact the WWF before setting off, as occasional closures are possible.

At Bosco dei Rocconi, it is better to take your time than to chase an observation: patience is part of the adventure.
