In the Maremma, you can mainly observe fallow deer, roe deer, wild boars, foxes and many birds; encounters with wild mammals are however never guaranteed. In the Maremma Park, around the Uccellina mountains and wooded areas, you will have the best chances of spotting ungulates at dawn or late in the day. Move forward quietly and keep your distance: wolves are present, but very discreet and rarely seen.
For birds, head for the wetlands near theOmbrone and the Orbetello lagoon : you might see herons, flamingos, cranes or wild geese, depending on the season. Winter is favourable for observing wintering birds; in the spring, migratory birds cross the region and some species nest in protected areas. Binoculars are useful, especially along the lagoons.
On the beaches, you can sometimes find traces of sea turtles, but don't expect to see one nesting: it's rare, and you must never approach an animal or touch a nest. For a simple outing, the park's wildlife trail can be walked at a leisurely pace; check access conditions before setting off, as some routes are regulated or require a reservation.
