Which hot springs in Tuscany are free?

The main free hot springs of Tuscany sont les Cascate del Mulino, in Saturnia, the Fosso Bianco, in Bagni San Filippo, et les Bagni di Petriolo. In all three cases, access to the natural pools is free; the nearby developed spa centres, however, are paid.

À Saturniathe cascading pools remain accessible all year round and the water is generally around 35 to 37 °C. Parking nearby may be paid or quickly full, especially during busy periods. At Bagni San Filippothe Fosso Bianco trail leads to the pools in a few minutes; allow about 5 to 10 minutes on foot to reach the first pools from the car park. The latter may be paid. At Petriolothe small pools are located near the Farma river: the water comes out of the spring at about 43 °Cbut cools down as it mixes with the river water.

Bring shoes that grip in the water: the stones and limestone deposits are slippery, and these natural sites are not supervised pools. There are not always changing rooms or facilities on site. Avoid settling near a very hot water inlet and get out if you feel unwell; if you have any health issues, seek advice from a professional before bathing.

My little tip: don't try to tick off all three in one day; choose your water spot and let Tuscany slow down the pace.
