The thermal water of Saturnia is hot and highly mineralized: it notably contains sulfur in the form of hydrogen sulfide, sulfates, bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium. It springs at around 37.5 °C and contains nearly 2.8 g of mineral salts per liter, as well as carbon dioxide; the sulfurous egg smell you may notice comes from the hydrogen sulfide.
The baths are mainly sought for relaxation, and the spa establishments attribute beneficial effects on the skin and respiratory tract to them. This does not mean they cure an illness: thermal water replaces neither a treatment nor medical advice, and the advertised benefits are not a guarantee of results for every person. At the Cascate del Mulino, the water cools as it flows, so the temperature may vary depending on the pool. If you are pregnant, if you have a heart condition or another chronic illness, seek advice from a healthcare professional before bathing; the heat and dissolved gases may not suit everyone.
