What is the average life expectancy of a Maremmano?

A maremmano-abruzzese dog generally lives 10 à 13 ans. That's an average, not a promise: its age depends notably on its health, its weight, its living conditions and the veterinary care it receives. Some live shorter lives, others exceed this range.

I'm clarifying the term, because in Maremma, "Maremmano" can also refer to the Maremmano horse. If that's indeed the one you're talking about, its life expectancy is rather on the order of 25 à 30 ans. For the dog, we're talking about the large white shepherd dog, originally bred to protect flocks: its lifespan is therefore significantly shorter than that of the horse.

In Maremma, context makes all the difference: sometimes the "Maremmano" has hooves, sometimes a big white snout! A little vocabulary trap to keep in mind when reading local stories.
