What's the best way to get around in Maremma?

The most convenient option is la voiture, especially if you want to explore inland Maremma, sleep in the countryside, or go from a village to a beach without depending on timetables. The distances aren't huge, but the roads are often secondary: allow about 1 h 15 between Grosseto and Pitigliano, pour quelque 80 km. In summer, allow extra time around the beaches and seaside resorts; in the towns, check where to park before entering the historic centre.

Without a car, it's doable if you limit your itinerary: the train serves in particular Grosseto, Albinia, Orbetello and Follonica, and buses connect several localities, including Orbetello, Albinia, Manciano and Pitigliano. But connections and timetables can make countryside visits complicated — check them for your dates, especially on Sundays and in the off-season. A good option is to reach the coast by train and then rent a car on site; the bike is better suited to local outings than long stages, since distances add up and some roads are hilly. In short: a car to roam freely, public transport for a stay focused on a few well-served towns.

Maremma isn't about racing to stamp your map: pick one area to explore, otherwise your days will fly by faster than a wild boar piglet in the bushes!
