What is the best guide for Tuscany?

For a trip that goes beyond Florence and Siena, I would choose the Michelin Green Guide "Tuscany, Umbria, Marche", in its 2026 edition. It also covers the Maremma et propose 67 walks and tours : handy if you want to alternate between cities, villages and country roads without organizing everything from scratch. Its drawback is that it goes beyond Tuscany and remains quite dense; for a short stay focused on a single city, you may not use a good part of it.

If you prefer a lighter format for planning an itinerary and choosing what to see day by day, the Lonely Planet Tuscany, published in French in juin 2025, is another option. In both cases, check the opening hours and prices of museums, trains and sites before leaving: this information can change, and a paper guide will not always be up to date. For a first trip of about 7 to 10 days, take Michelin if you are traveling through several areas; if you stay mainly in Florence or in a single area, a more compact guide will be enough.

Keep half a day with no plans: in Tuscany, detours often have more charm than the next box ticked in the guide.
