What can you do at Bagni San Filippo?

À Bagni San Filippo, you can swim in the natural pools of the White Creek (Fosso Bianco), walk in the woods along the thermal stream and see the limestone formation of the Balena Bianca. Access to the pools is free; from the village, allow about 5 to 10 minutes on foot to reach the trail, then about ten minutes of walking to reach the waterfall. Note: it is forbidden to walk on the Balena Bianca, to touch it or to swim in it, in order to preserve the limestone. The pools where swimming is allowed are located elsewhere along the stream.

Bring a towel, a swimsuit and shoes with good grip: the stones are often slippery, and the sulphurous water can leave a smell on your skin or clothes. Its temperature varies from pool to pool; near the source, it is very hot, so test the water before getting in. In summer, come early or late in the day to avoid the crowds; in winter, the contrast between the hot water and the cold air is pleasant, but the ground can be muddy. Parking in the village is paid and spaces can be scarce on weekends. If you want to extend the walk, you can also stop by the little church of San Filippo in the village.

The Balena Bianca gives this walk a little expedition feel: you almost expect a fairy-tale backdrop to appear around a bend in the trail.
