Why is Talamone famous?

Talamone is best known for its Etruscan pediment of Talamonaccio and for its role in Garibaldi's expedition in 1860. The pediment, discovered near an ancient temple from the 4th century BC, représente le combat des Sept contre Thèbes. À savoir : sur la colline de Talamonaccio, il reste peu de vestiges visibles du temple ; c’est le fronton reconstitué qui constitue la pièce remarquable, conservée à Orbetello.

The village is also associated with Garibaldi's passage: its port served as a stopover for the volunteers joining the Expedition of the Thousand. In the village, you can see the Rocca Aldobrandesca and the medieval ramparts, of which the Porta Garibaldi is the ancient access still preserved. Talamone is located about 24 km from Orbetello, on a rocky promontory by the sea. Its reputation therefore owes as much to this history as to its coastal position, near the Maremma Natural Park ; ce n’est pas pour autant un grand site archéologique à parcourir sur place.

After the landscapes of the Maremma, Talamone gives the coast a little extra touch of history — the kind of stop that benefits from not being rushed between two stages.
