Why is Porto Santo Stefano famous?

Porto Santo Stefano is best known for its maritime tradition and the Palio Marinaro dell’Argentario, a rowing race held every August 15 between the four historic districts: Croce, Fortezza, Pilarella and Valle. The competition, officially organized since 1937, takes place in the harbor; each crew rows a total course of 4 kilometers. Around the Palio, you can also watch the districts parade in costume and feel how much the town's life remains tied to the sea.

The other heritage landmark is the Fortezza Spagnola, built during the period of Spanish rule to defend the coast. It houses exhibitions devoted in particular to underwater archaeology and shipwrights. Opening hours vary by season and occasional closures are possible: it's best to check before your visit. The harbor is also an embarkation point for the island of Giglio and Giannutri. To be honest, don't expect a large old town teeming with monuments: the appeal of Porto Santo Stefano lies mainly in its history as a fishing port, its traditions, and the fortress overlooking the village.

In Porto Santo Stefano, I would leave the picture-postcard alleys to the hilltop villages: here, the charm plays out at dock level. Don't just rush through it before the boat!
