Where can wild horses be found in Tuscany?

The horses seen living freely in Tuscany are mainly found in Maremma, in the Tenuta di Alberese, near the village of Alberese, about 15 km from Grosseto. They are Maremmano breed horses raised in herds on pasture, particularly around the locality of 4. Spergolaia, and not wild horses in the strict sense: they are followed by the butteri, the herdsmen of the region.

The practical nuance is that the lands of the Tenuta are farmed and the herds are not necessarily visible from the paths open to the public. Their location varies, so an encounter is never guaranteed, in summer as in the rest of the year. To approach them in good conditions, find out about the visits or horseback rides offered in Alberese and book in advance; some visits to the Tenuta are by reservation only. Avoid approaching the horses or feeding them. The Maremma Natural Park, all around, is best known for its landscapes, beaches and wildlife: it is not a place where you can count on easily spotting horses.

Keep an eye on the horizon, but don't turn the walk into a horse hunt: in Maremma, the pleasure is also in the waiting and the great landscapes.
